Bio
Yung Dray was born Rashaad Randall on March 9, 1991 in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Dray was born to a family from the lower 9th ward of New Orleans but was mostly raised in other parts of the city, including Algiers and the New Orleans' East. He was brought up on the R&B genre of music. At a young age he would sing along with artists such as Mary J. Blige and Jaheim. He was introduced to hip-hop music by his godfather. Among the artists were: The Notorious B.I.G., P. Diddy, and Outkast. He had not become involved in music himself until the age of fourteen. He discovered a program by the name of Mixcraft and learned to operate its features very quickly. One day, he and a friend decided to make a song using the 'Rubberband Man' instrumental by artist T.I. This was his very first time writing and recording an actual song. Oddly enough, this was not the song which began his career as an artist. This actually started after the release of the 2005 blockbuster Hustle and Flow. This movie was and continues to be the main inspiration for Dray's entire career. After the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, he became more drawn toward the creative side of his personality. He continued to write rhymes and search for other ways to promote his music. After many phases of trial and error, he intended to give up making music completely. he attempted to convince himself that this would be best, but soon realized that regardless of how many times he quit, he would always find himself writing, or doing something else related to his music. The true start of his career was in late 2006. His high school basketball team became the main support in this. After out-of-town games the team would freestyle on the ride home, but because of his weak freestyling skills Dray would skip his turn. He eventually was left out entirely. It only took Dray one time to realize that he had the potential which he thought was absent for two years. He was almost instantly inspired to do what the other players and even he himself thought he couldn't. About two weeks later he uploaded two songs to his myspace page. These included a remix to Mims' 'This is why I'm Hot' and Rick Ross' 'Hustlin', which he had actually remixed numerous times before. Unknown to him, two of the other basketball players visited his page and heard the songs. They approached him personally and began to promote him. This same day Dray decided to become serious about his music and pursue a career in it. In April 2007, he released his first mixtape 'Heatin' Up Tha Block: The Revival Of Nu Awlenz'. This mixtape was rushed due to the quick approach of the end of the school year. Dray even admits that the mixtape was not a good release when asked about it. During the summer he discovered the virtual music production software FL Studio. With this software he produced his first single 'Ridin Wit A G', which acquired the attention of Platinum South Records' CEO Christopher Evans. On August 10th, Mr. Evans offered Dray a spot on his label's roster, which he proudly accepted. In April 2008, a year after his first mixtape, he released 'The 9th Wonder'. This mixtape was proof of his advancement in the hip-hop industry. This mixtape was also based entirely on real life events he faced. Evidently, He wrote the songs as he was going through these events. Even after that he continued to grow, mature, and develop his own style of music. He taught himself many different techniques and skills for recording, producing, and mixing as well. He did this all while maintaining his grades in high school and even promoting other artists. Dray has truly come a very long way in these long four years and yet he still strives to become even better every day, constantly increasing his knowledge and becoming more involved with networking. He even established a promotional group on July 24, 2008. His first artists included: Lil Lo, Villie VL, Dre Skrilla, and Kartell. On August 16, 2010, this group became his own independent record label, On The Rise Entertainment. He hopes that his label will one day be one of the top record labels. Until then, he and his artists are working hard every single day to reach the goal of every artist, the major record deal. -
