  • Meet Mujeres

by Dan Hyman May 25, 2011 at 4:09 PM

    .
Close your eyes at a Mujeres hometown gig and suddenly you find yourself in a dusty garage: the sun drippin’ down on your leathered paws, the echoes of greased-up rockabilly surf punk clanging off the rickety walls. Open ‘em and you’re back in a small Barcelona club, watching four Spanish dudes who barely speak a lick of English, ripping through bursts of raucous twangy riffs, a bass-heavy thwack of sound collapsing over the audience in a frothy wake.
    .
While formally known as Iberic garage rock (aptly named for the band’s Iberian Peninsula roots), the brand of music that Mujeres call their own is an amalgamation of grit and strut. Thanks to particularly riveting performances at last year’s Primavera Festival and this spring’s South by Southwest, the four-piece Barcelona-based crew, who met while studying film and never had any real intentions of forming a band, are poised to create a similarly eye-opening experience on this side of the pond.
    .
And the band thrives on uncertainty. Each night, a different band member determines the night’s set list, a purposefully evolving entity. “Other bands fall into the bad habit of playing the same songs in the same order, closing the same way every night,” says vocalist and guitarist Yago Alcover. “You end up like some bureaucratic delegate. – of rock.”
    .
Earlier this year, our friends at Noisey caught up with the quick-witted Mujeres men after a hometown gig at Barcelona’s “mythical” Apolo, and, as evidenced by the video above, aside from a swingin’ rhythm section and impassioned vocal spirit, these makeshift musicians also have a knack for self-deprecation. “After you’ve lost it all: money, friends, women, respect and even dignity,” says guitarist Marti Gallen Munoz, describing his band, “you get to a point where you become… Mujeres.”

In news that we’re sure bummed out Maynard Kennan and elated Josh Freese’s accountant, the drummer posted today that he will not be performing with longtime act A Perfect Circle on their summer tour in order to handle drumming duties for Weezer.
    .
In a statement on his site, Freese wrote, “I’m sad to report that I will be sitting out the A Perfect Circle tour this summer. Maybe the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make professionally and it hasn’t been easy on me. I’ve been looking forward to APC reforming for years now and the timing just couldn’t have been worse. I’d already committed the time to Weezer and I am a man of my word. As much as I hate to have to miss the APC tour there wasn’t a whole lot I could do about it.”

  • Living With Lions respond to controversial album

    .
Vancouver punk act Living With Lions have issued a statement in regards to their new album Holy Shit. The album has drawn controversy from the Canadian government for being subtitled “The Poo Testament” in the liner notes, depicting Christ as feces and basically being a huge parody of the Bible, among other things.
    .
The problem is that the aforementioned liner notes also include the sentence, “we acknowledge the financial support of the Government Of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage.” In their statement the band write, “The content of our artwork for our new recording was created out of our passion for satire and absurdist humor. The lyrical and musical content of this record does not contain any commentary on religion, nor does it use a pejorative or malicious voice against any particular group of people (excluding possibly some of our ex-girlfriends).”
    .
It goes on to say, “When the idea came up to simply alter the artwork for Holy Shit without having to expedite the repayment to FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings), we chose to entirely return the money so that Holy Shit can forever remain true to the original format.” Soon afterward, the band’s label Black Box issued a statement explaining, “In light of the recent controversy regarding the artwork for Living With Lions’ album, Holy Shit, the band and label have voluntarily agreed to return the loan of $13,248.00 in its entirety, which was offered in support of this record.”
