Hey, guess what? ‘The Amazing Spider Man’ made a whole bunch of money this weekend. What? No duh? Seriously. Over six days, the reboot of the series whose last film was released a mere five years ago, took home over $140 million dollars. That is what I like to call “buckets of ducats,” my friend. When reduced to just the weekend, ‘The Amazing Spider Man’ still beat its competition, making $65 million. It’s a win all around as the success debunked the idea that perhaps America didn’t need another ‘Spider Man’ so close to the originals, but we went “all in” (POKER REFERENCE Y’ALL!) for version Garfield/Stone. I didn’t see the movie, but I like the leads and anything has to be better than ‘Spider Man 3’ (EMO MAGUIRE! EMO MAGUIRE EMOGUIRE?)

The other big releases – Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’ and ‘Katy Pery: Part Of Me’ – did not fair so well. With a take home of $16.2 million – good for fourth place – ‘Savages’ is the biggest hit of Taylor Kitsch’s career. After two giant bombs in ‘John Carter’ and ‘Battleship,’ can the former Tim Riggins use ‘Savages’ minor success to bounce back and get a little piece of that Channing Tatum money? Time will tell.

The Katy Perry film managed a wildly disappointing $7.2 million for the weekend, a far cry from the $73 million Justin Bieber’s film earned (after it’s entire run) last year. Which brings us to the age old question, what does this weekend’s box office say about us? It’s pretty evident, actually – if you’re going to make a documentary about a pop star, that pop star had better be a cute boy because that’s the only way it’ll make money. No matter how many records Katy Perry may sell (Do people buy records? I’m a real oldface, over here. It should probably be “no matter how many downloads Katy Perry may…hmmm…get people to download?), tweenaged girls ain’t paying to see her movie. Just not happening. The next pop star documentary should just be about One Direction. Simple and clean, cut right to the chase because that group has like thirty boys in it. Enjoy it, America. This is what you have wrought.
