When Willow Smith erupted onto the pop music scene in 2010 with her breakout hit “Whip My Hair,” the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith did so in a look-at-me, in-your-face manner; her single was over-the-top, balls-to-the-wall pop. It appears a bit of time and maturation have altered the young Roc Nation signee’s outlook on life. Smith’s latest single “I Am Me,” for which she just released a music video, finds her getting reflective and inspirational, while simultaneously focusing on embracing one’s individuality. Watch Willow Smith’s new video for “I Am Me” below.

    .

“I Am Me” finds Willow in various New York City locales — namely what appears to be Washington Square Park and the NYC HIgh Line — and echoing the song’s message of self-expression at times by standing in front of a wall of graffiti. She soon belts out a pointed, direct lyric: “Your validation is just not that important to me.” Of course, Smith is referencing those critics who’ve said that the 11-year-old dresses far too risqué for her tender age. Later, she directly addresses this issue. “People don’t like the way I dress,” she sings.
    .
Is this a turning point for Willow? Probably not. Chances are “I Am Me” is simply one ballad-esque number on the otherwise pop-heavy debut album that’s still to come from the pint-sized popster. What do you think of Willow Smith’s new video for “I Am Me”? Let us know in the comments below.

This girl has been groomed by the best as parent-2-child & professional-2-professional and she cant go wrong. It will be interesting to see her blossom into what Willow choses, aside from what her parents hav anything to do with. Go Willow, gro Willow!!

I love this song, very simple clear message. I used to dress like a dude at some point in my life (yes male shoes & cut off all my hair), some people thought I was gay- in fashion it called 'Androgynous'. I still wear male-like shoes now- lace-up brogues, I love them. Willow is still a kid so has many years of different looks to give us, I would like to thank her for re-introducing me back to Billy Idol again. I hope her music career lasts for many years.
