The wait is over! The Hunger Games: Catching Fire character of Finnick Odair has finally been cast, and it’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White & The Huntsman star Sam Clafin who will be entering the arena alongside Katniss and the rest of the gang. Variety has the report, and they also say that Oscar winner Melissa Leo and “Monk” star Tony Shalhoub are in talks to join the cast, too. Read on to find out who they’ll play!
Melissa Leo, who has never been in a blockbuster movie up until now, is in line to play Finnick’s mentor Mags, while Shalhoub, who you may recognize from the first two Men in Black movies, is set to play Beetee, an inventor who uses electricity as a dangerous weapon during the Quarter Quell. They join Amanda Plummer in the cast, who was just cast this morning as Wiress. Catching Fire will be directed by I Am Legend helmer Francis Lawrence, and has a release date of November 22nd, 2013. What do you think about Clafin as Finnick? Let us know in the comments!
UPDATE: According to a tweet by Variety writer Jeff Sneider, Melissa Leo’s representatives have been informed that the actress will NOT be getting the role of Mags. It’s unclear whether Leo auditioned and didn’t make the cut, dropped out of the running due to a busy schedule, or something else entirely. Either way, I’m sad to see her go because she’s a great actress and would have added yet another bit of gravitas and respectability to a cast that’s already filling up with some excellent actors.
