After teasing fans for a few weeks No Doubt has finally released their comeback single “Settle Down.” The track, which will appear on the band’s upcoming new album Push and Shove, is the group’s first new number in a lot of years and we’re still trying to determine whether it lives up to the hype.

“Settle Down,” which the band premiered on their website this morning, is a light pop number, lacking the hefty impact the band’s previous choruses have held. There’s a summery, Southern California vibe in the song, with hints of reggae and ska infused in the instrumentation, and for the most part that sensibility is amiable. We just wish the song had more weight, especially as Gwen Stefani howls, “I’m a ruff and tuff/And nothin’s gonna knock this girl down.” Listen below:

We’re curious to see how the rest of the album compares to this single, although unfortunately we may not find that out until the disc’s release on September 25. We will, however, get to see the video for this song very soon. Tonight, in fact. The video for “Settle Down” will premiere this evening on E! at 8 p.m. EST. Director Sophie Muller told Rolling Stone of the clip, “I think (bassist Tony Kanal) came up with the idea that we should do something with trucks. The idea is they are all driving to meet after having had their separate lives over the last 10 years.” She added, “It’s such a mix of cultures, their band, and what their music is like. We tried to do something that resembled different parts of the world rather than a specific place.”
