The official music video for “Celebrate,” the recently-released single that Whitney Houston recorded with co-star Jordin Sparks for the film Sparkle, has now been released. And while the video primarily features Sparks and her Sparkle castmates, there is in fact a small helping of footage from the film that shows the late singer looking especially elegant while playing the single mother of a vocal trio. While it’s undoubtedly painful for fans of Houston to see recent footage of her, the song itself, which was produced by R. Kelly, is particularly upbeat and feel-good in nature, helping to offset any potential discomfort. Sparks revealed in a recent interview that Houston was originally set to be featured in the video. “We planned on it being Whitney and me, but she’s not here, so we wanted to make it a tribute to her,” the singer said. Sparks also added that while both her and Houston appear on the track, they were never able to be in the studio at the same time. “I would have loved to be in the studio with her, but with Whitney’s schedule it got so crazy [we never] found the time to get together, so we recorded it separately,” she explained. “But it was amazing to be able to go in after she had already finished her part… It was so cool because you could just hear the smile in Whitney’s voice when she was singing it.”

Sparkle, which hits theaters on August 17th, was set to be Houston’s comeback film — something Houston played down to us during our visit to the film’s Detroit set last Novemeber. However, with the singer’s tragic death this past February, the film, and songs like “Celebrate,” now exist as a testament to the late singer’s lost talent.
