Kelly Clarkson returned today with a new music video for “Dark Side,” the third single off her new LP, Stronger. And it’s not altogether surprising that she’s decided to reunite with director Shane Drake, who was behind the lens for the visual to her hit single “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Because her latest tune is another of the motivational variety. As the title hints, Clarkson ventures beneath the surface to explore the “dark side” of various characters — a handicapped war vet, a pill-addicted beauty queen and a victim of school bullying. .
We’d like to think of Clarkson’s latest video as “Firework” 2.0.We’re, of course, referring to Katy Perry’s chart-topping single whose video emphasized individuality and self-awareness. And while Clarkson’s video goes deeper, challenging listeners to realize that everyone has there inner demons, there exists a similar message of perseverance.
.
And it’s hard to find fault with this sort of positive message being eschewed via Clarkson’s music — and largely Perry’s for that matter as well (see her latest single ““Part of Me”). In a world where money, sex and outer-beauty are constantly being thrown in our faces, it’s always a welcome relief to see popular artists using their pulpit to take a more meaningful stance.
