Bio
“Shakti knows her culture at the same time she grew up over here. The music speaks for itself.” -Russell Simmons .. .. "I haven't heard anyone mixing Indian music the way she does..." -Wyclef Jean .. .. "Beautiful and Exotic" -Beyonce Knowles .. .. “Feminine energy that communicates through impulses, sensations and feelings” .. .. Global Soul Entertainment, Inc./Innertemple Records introduces SHAKTI to the Universe. Exuding glamour and verve like a glistening eastern gem, her debut record "Feminenergy” contains rich eastern beats mixed with melodies reminiscent of Indian ragas and soulful R&B. Interweaving Pop and Urban grooves “The First Indian Hip-Pop Diva” draws from her ethnic heritage with extreme fluidity. Shakti defines Feminine Energy and Power! Born to parents of East Indian and Malaysian/Singaporean descent, Detroit “Motown” Michigan would not only be her physical birthplace, but also the backdrop to the evolution of her musical style. Shakti’s mother came from a Hindu-Brahmin and performing arts family and her father came from an impoverished gypsy family with an entrepreneurial spirit. Going against the caste system they immigrated to the US to live the “American Dream.” Struggling to make it they settled in the 7 mile area of Detroit. Surrounded by the urban sounds of Hip-Hop, R&B and Jazz Shakti was privileged to experience the best of both worlds. At home it was a traditional Indian upbringing while outside there were kids beat boxing and spinning on cardboard. Encompassing her home life with street surroundings, she coined a style all of her own and the birth of 'East meets West' began. Shakti recognized at an early age that she wanted to bridge cultures through music. Shakti has evolved into an ambassador of global style and culture. She will mesmerize you with an exotic beauty that oozes self-possessed sensuality. At the same time she is a humanitarian stating that “Music is her vehicle to change lives." .. Shakti’s International Hit Single “Do The Thang Thang” received tremendous airplay from BBC Radio 1, to American Stations such as New York's Hot 97 and Power 105 Los Angeles. Shakti charted #5 in India. As a catalyst for bridging cultural gaps, she continues to display her efforts with her debut Feminenergy which features recording artist Heather Hunter and other guest appearances. This innovative project is produced by "Bellringer" and an internationally acclaimed team of producers such as Bollywood's Karthik Raaja, Lounge Lizzards, Aaron "Freedom" Lyles (Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone) and The Jettsonz (Nina Sky, Tarkan). Shakti's music has been featured in the film Paul Blart Mall Cop, Tyra Banks' America's Next Top Model, NBC’s Outsourced and on the IFC original series Bollywood Hero, just to name a few. .. Shakti went to Interlochen Arts Academy for Junior High and relocated to California to advance her acting and modeling career. Pursuing a formal education she attended the esteemed Berklee College of Music after turning down a Scholarship to the New School in New York she attended numerous schools earning her Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice/Opera and Jazz studies. Receiving a scholarship, she went on and obtained her Masters in Music from The Chicago Musical College. Shakti garnered production and engineering credits at recording studios such as Chicago Recording Company and Chicago Trax Studios (R. Kelley’s Chocolate Factory). .. Shakti’s stage performance captures audiences worldwide. After studying Bharathanatyam (Indian Classical dance) and Oriental (Belly) Dance for years, she fused a dance style that is as unique as her personality. “Feminenergy” features Heather Hunter and other guest appearances. Innovatively produced by "Bellringer" and an Internationally acclaimed team of producers from 3 continents including Bollywood's Karthik Raaja, Lounge Lizzards Aaron "Freedom" Lyles (Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone) and The Jettsonz (Nina Sky, Tarkan).
