I saw the movie as a child in middle school, which prompted me to read the book.   Many themes in the original story have already becaome a realtiy, just in a very muted way.  Our lack of privacy & freedom is so obvious yet acceptable because it's enforced so nicely.

The reason I loved this movie so much was that it was filmed in the year 1984 and was shot on the exact days and places in which the book took place. Another reason was the retro-1948 design of the movie, the computer monitors had those rounded screens like 1948 TV sets! I think this was Richard Burtens last movie!
