David Sylvian at Punkt 2011

David Sylvian is confirmed as 'Artist in Residence' for the Punkt Festival in Kristiansand, Norway (1st-3rd September). David will be creating an audiovisual installation entitled "Uncommon Deities", and will curate an evening of concerts, including the debut live performance of his 1988 release "Plight and Premonition". In addition to David, this concert will feature John Tilbury, Jan Bang, Erik Honoré, Eivind Aarset and Philip Jeck. For more info and tickets go to www.punktfestival.no.

Punkt is an innovative music festival in Kristiansand, Norway, based on the immediate live remixing of all main stage concerts, giving the audience instant reinterpretations of the carefully selected artists - by other artists.

Punkt is curated by musicians/producers Jan Bang and Erik Honoré. Examples of their own music kan be heard on this page. The first 4 tracks are from the Punkt (Bang/Honoré) album "Crime Scenes", available on iTunes. Guest artists are David Sylvian (Angels) and Sidsel Endresen (Map), and Arve Henriksen (Body Language). Track 5, Assembly, is taken from Arve Henriksen's critically acclaimed album "Cartography" (ECM), produced by Bang/Honoré. The last two tracks are taken from the album "Birth Wish" by Christian Wallumrød/Arve Henriksen/Jan Bang/Erik Honoré.

The main Punkt Festival is arranged each September in Kristiansand, but Punkt has also been invited abroad with its concept and musician network, and has visited London, Mannheim, Düsseldorf and most recently is invited to Tallinn, Estonia, where there will be a 2 day Punkt event on April 20 and 21 as a part of “Tallinn: European Capital of Culture 2011”.

The Live Remix concept:
The multi-channel sound from the Punkt Festival Main Stage is transferred to a small stage/studio environment called The Alpha Room, where the audience can go to listen to the interpretation of the concert they just heard. In this intimate setting, the music is immediately remixed by acclaimed musicians, producers and remixers.

Previous festivals:

The Punkt Festival was arranged for the first time in 2005, featuring artists like Jon Hassell, Nils Petter Molvær, Biosphere, Sidsel Endresen and Supersilent. BBC Music Magazine called it “This year’s most innovative festival”.

In 2006, Fennesz, J. Peter Schwalm (premiering new music by Schwalm/Brian Eno), Arve Henriksen, Food, Mari Boine and Tys Tys were among the artists who came to perform.

Punkt 07 featured David Toop, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Jaki Liebezeit & Burnt Friedman, Hans Appelqvist, Huntsville and a re-visit by Jon Hassell, a new music/visual arts project called Punkt Kunst, and music related seminars.

Punkt 08 boasted Brian Eno’s audiovisual installation “77 Million Paintings for Punkt”, and the legendary musician/producer stayed for four days to hold a seminar and witness concerts and live remixes featuring an array of profiled Norwegian and international artists.

Punkt 09 featured, in addition to Norwegian artists, US spoken word artist Ursula Rucker, Imogen Heap/Alanis Morrissette producer Guy Sigsworth and the world premiere of the David Sylvian documentary about the process behind his 2009 album “Manafon”.

Punkt 10 featured, among others, Supersilent feat. John Paul Jones, Nils Petter Molvær, Serena Maneesh, Veljo Tormis and Skúli Sverrisson.

“Norway has done it again! My award for this year’s most innovative festival goes to Punkt held at the end of June. (...) The concerts took place in one of Kristiansand’s theatres, during which Bang and Honoré were underground doing live-remixes. At the end the audience changed venues to hear the remix, and to hear what the guest musicians interacting with the remix might do. Sidsel Endresen guested on the remix of Jon Hassell, Nils Petter Molvær guested on Biosphere’s remix, and Audun Kleive was there for Supersilent. With so many musicians eager to hear what everyone else was doing, the atmosphere was electric.” - Fiona Talkington, BBC
