"Wisteria woke me this morning, And there was all June in the garden; I felt them, early, warning, Lest I miss any part of the day." Ann McGough, Summons
I am knee-deep in strawberries and crocuses mes amies, as June offers up a veritable hamper of delights. Firstly we pop over to Paris on 9th June to support my darling old friend and producer of my album, Charlie Winston at La Cigale. He is a huge success in France with his latest album and the show has been sold out since February otherwise I would urge the Frenchies amongst you to join us. However, a few days later on Friday 12th June, keeping with the French theme, we will be back with our buddies from Raison D'Etre at the Pigalle Club in Picadilly with a brilliant line up and the sweetest cocktails (highly highly recommended - details below for cheap tickets and timings). Following that, on Sunday 21st June we will be joining in the fun and games at Monkeychews in Chalk Farm with the crew from Mi7 (they recorded and mixed my album).

The UK-based Aussie offers up a rather simmering set of slow-burners that would otherwise peg her as a torch-singer if it weren’t for her strong pop leanings. Though Joni Mitchell would be an obvious comparison, it is actually the other quirksome Canadian songstress with which Barber would likely find a kindred spirit in: Jane Siberry. Both these ladies share a lyrical sensibility that allows them to tell skewed tales of peculiar lives with such moving sincerity. Barber’s greatest asset is her voice with which she deftly scat-sings over the joyous numbers, most notably on the amusingly-titled album opener, “The Num Num Song”. Theatricality and wit are key elements here and if that somehow escapes you, the scarlet kiss of ruffles that Barber adorns on the CD sleeve (in cheeky reference to the album’s title), will surely clue you in." Bisous, Miranda xx

A wee publishing deal, a new music video and some garden shed recordings
Allo allo, I have bitten off a wee bit more than I can chew...in a good way - music, work and an intensive foundation course to boot. Nothing like keeping the juices flowing. Save to say, I am keeping gigs to one a month until I can get back into the swing in April, but they are going beautifully. I am so enjoying the gorgeous musicians I am working with at the moment (Nick Rye drums/percussion, Dave Hawkins guitar, Davide Mantovani double bass, Gemma Fuller trumpet, and Sian Lattimer backing vocals) - could not find a lovelier and more talented bunch. The vibe on stage is the best yet. Just loving it.
So I jumped into a Garden Shed in Surrey with a few of them just before Christmas and came out with six, delicious, raw new tracks which I will share with you shortly. Just sorting out some bits and bobs. You know how it goes. Richard Sadler played double bass on these tracks so I will be getting him onto the stage at some point very soon I hope.
And a week or so ago I signed a wee publishing deal with Guy Fletcher at Commercial Arts which is a lovely feeling. It will be quite a joy to have someone doing some leg work for me for a change! Yipppeeeee! And he really gets the music and me, which is starting from just the right place in my book. So we shall see. I have grown very pragmatic about the way things go in this industry, and provided I continue to enjoy it, then I will continue to play, to write, to sing and to forge ahead and find my way. Sharing the journey.
And here is the music video for "King Of The Island", last track on my album. It was shot by Oz Smith on La Gomera in the Canaries just after Christmas. It was tough!
All my love and thanks for the support,
M x

Hello sweet'eart, this is my last wee newsletter for 2008, and I'd like to thank you for your support over the past 12 months with the launch of my album and for coming along to my live shows to share in the music. That's where I feel the love most!
Some folk have been buying up copies of Lips' Decision at my recent live shows and on my website to give away as precious little Chrissie gifts - I am told they make for a super special stocking filler! So I have a wee deal for you. If you fancy grabbing a copy of the album for £10, and you make the order before 19th December, I will pop in my two EPs for free, My Tomorrow and Barber. Before you take the plunge, feel free to have a wee glance at snippets from some recent album reviews below, including Blues Matters and Rock n Reel magazines. They paint the picture pretty well.
"There's a certain type of nightclub that seems to exist only in film. Candlelit booths surround a dancefloor that no one dances on. Chandeliers suspended from the ceiling create light and shadow. There's a grand piano on a stage that's too small for it and the rest of the band struggle to find space. Sat behind the grand piano, in a black cocktail dress, is a slightly quirky, but original and angelically voiced singer who distracts the plot away from the cigarette girls. Miranda Barber is that girl, "Lips Decision" is her night club. Mellow jazz with 60s vibe the sound." Fatea Magazine http://www.fatea-records.co.uk/magazine/releasesaad.html

[Lips' Decision] "is an album oozing sexuality, in 1950's smoky jazz bar feel. There are some gorgeous bluesy piano moments and soul that would melt even the coldest of hearts..." Leigh Rafferty, Glasswerk.co.uk
"Soulful, sophisticated and fun, Lips' Decision mixes the smouldering, late night jazz singing of Billie Holliday with piano-led Joni Mitchell-style confessionals......With a little luck the smooth MOR of Lips' Decision may just end up being the soundtrack to your summer." Ian Sinclair, Tourdates
"...no gimmicks and no overstated production. Miranda can be serious, jazzy, cheeky, raunchy even; but always classy, as this album illustrates...a truly excellent debut album." Peter Coulston, Seatwaves
Have a wonderful snug Christmas wherever you may be, and see you in the new year, Love Miranda xx
