BIO

K. S. Resmi is a skilled classical vocalist from Kerala, South India. She is the foremost disciple of Smt. Dr. K. Omanakutty and now studies with Smt. Lalitha Shivakumar for Carnatic music (South Indian classical). Resmi also studied Kathakali padams from Sri Nelliyode Vasudevan Namboodiri (traditional music of Kerala) and studied Carnatic vina with Smt. Kamala Lekshmi. Her training in Hindustani music (North Indian classical) was with Sri Ramesh Narayan. Resmi also currently studies North Indian Dhrupad vocal with Sri Ramakanth Gundecha (of The Gundecha Brothers).

Her formal education includes earning BA and first rank MA degrees in Carnatic Music at H. H. The Maharaja’s College for Women at the University of Kerala in Trivandrum, Kerala. Currently, she is ABD for a Ph.D. in North and South Indian Classical Music at the University of Kerala.

She has taught Carnatic vocal as a fulltime faculty member in the Department of Indian Music at the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India from 2004-2007. Previously, she taught Carnatic vocal at Sangeeta Bharati (Malabar Gopalan Nair Memorial Music and Research Center) in Kerala from 1995-2004. From 2007-2008, K. S. Resmi was an invited artist on Carnatic music at Goucher College and Towson University both located in Maryland.

K. S. Resmi is a highly experienced performer of Indian classical music as well as an experieced vocalist for bharata natyam dance and has performed on numerous tours both nationally all over India and internationally all over the USA. She is featured on 14 CD recordings between 2001 and 2006 including the acclaimed 6 CD set of compositions by Sri Swathi Thirunal Maharaja called Swathi, released on Rajalakshmi Audio in 2003. She is the first woman in the world to be featured on a CD recording of Kathakali padams entitled Samyamakannorudyanam, released in 2001 by Sangeeta Bharati. Resmi has also participated in numerous film soundtracks of Kerala film music director M. G. Radhakrishnan from 1997-2003. In 2002, she performed in 22 cities in the USA on a Carnatic music tour and in 2007, she was featured in the annual Sun to Stars Festival of Indian music in New York, and performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Ohio with percussionist N. Amrit. In 2008, she was featured at the Many Moons Asian Festival at Towson University in Maryland, and was the featured concert artist for the Swathi Thirunal Music Festival at Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Maryland. In 2008-2009, she performed in fusion concerts of the North American Frame Drum Association, Inc. with N. Scott Robinson, David Kuckhermann, Glen Fittin, Yousif Sheronick, Marla Leigh, and Steáfán Hannigan. IN August of 2009, Resmi was an invited artist at the Tamburi Mundi festival in Germany where she taught a workshop on Carnatic singing and performed in 3 concerts of Indian and fusion music with Ramesh Shotham, N. Scott Robinson, Todd Roach, David Kuckhermann, Mac Ritchey, and other artists from around the world.

She has also produced a DVD documentary about her guru Dr. K. Omanakutty in 2003 called Guruvandanam. Resmi has authored book titled Syama Krishna Sodari about the compositions of Syama Sastri published by Sangeeta Bharati in 2004. In 2005, she presented her paper on “Raga Alapana” at the National Seminar conference on Teaching Methodology in Music and Dance in State Government Institutions, Colleges and Universities in Tamil Nadu at the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Her article “Sopana Sangeetham” (on the temple music of Kerala) has been published by Carva Trust in 2006. In 2008, she was part of a panel of artists that presented "Strategies for Teaching Improvisation to Classical Musicians" at the International Society for Improvised Music at the University of Denver in Colorado, USA.

Currently, K. S. Resmi is located in Baltimore County, Maryland in the USA where she continues teaching and performing Carnatic music and performs in a unique world music group called Ensemble Datura featuring Carnatic vocals world percussionists Todd Roach, N.
