Bio
Folk musician and composer Jacquelyn Hynes plays silver and wooden flutes, whistles, pipes, sax, and piano. As a soloist she has supported leading traditional musicians including Martin Hayes, Karen Matheson, Michael McGoldrick, Mary Coughlan, Lunasa, Genticorum, Lily Neill, Eleanor MacEvoy and Dónal Lunny. She's also performed at the House of Lords and City Hall and for two Irish Presidents, Mary Macaleese and Micheal D. Higgins on their visits to England.
She received an Arts Council England Awards for All for her Folk/World music project "Taraba" which incoporated traditional and original music and musicians from England, India, Spain, North Africa and Ireland -Critic's Choice, Time Out - and she now leads "Avalonia" which evolved from Taraba, with Hossam Ramzy and Najma Akhtar. She was awarded the Katherine McGillivray "Get A Life Fund" for musicians which facilitated an MA in Advanced Performance at The Irish World Academy.
She was a featured artist at And'Art International Festival in Morocco, collaborating with traditional Gnawa musicians and urban hip hop artists from Casablanca, where her composition Lost In Marrakech was chosen to reflect the theme of the residency in concert at the Theatre Royale. Performances include QEH, Barbican, Haringey Irish Centre, House of Lords, Handel House, City Hall, Under One Sky Festival, Levellers Festival, Gollowan Festival, Ealing Jazz Festival, Ardoyne Fleadh Belfast, British Consulate Delhi, Oslo and Vollen Norway, Lovebox, BigSexyFest, Spitalfields Music Festival, Livestock, London Irish Centre, Irish Cultural Centre, Green Note Camden and Glastonbury.
She has also worked for over 30 theatre companies as an actor and musician and composed music for theatre including the mad songs for KAOS Theatre's Hamlet (in which she played"A tortured and Pre-Raphaelite Ophelia" - The Stage) the KAOS Kassandra, a song for Merlin at the Riverside Studios London (in which she played Guinevere) and Sinan Unel's Pera Palas at the Arcola Theatre Dalston. ( "Fine music" - The Times) Most recently she was commissioned by Tyneside irish festival as composer for "Father Cass's Bodhran" ("songs composed and performed by the exceptionally talented Jacquelyn Hynes" Irish World)
Her debut album "Silver and Wood" (described as "Wild and lovely" by Dónal Lunny) is shortly to be released by Hobgoblin Records. Her new duo with folk-singer J.Eoin recently performed at Twickfolk, toured to Norway, performed at Folk Rising and supported the Dónal Lunny trio in London at the Irish Cultural Centre. Her work has been broadcast on resonance FM, RTE and Clare FM.
Jacqy is an activist with the Musicians Union and is an elected member of the Folk Roots and Traditional Music Committee; The London Regional Committee and Chair of the Equalities Committee. She is also a Regional Board Representative for Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Eirann and an elected member of the Royal Society Of Musicians. Jacqy is currently Folk and Flute tutor at Morley College and Flute Coach for the award-winning Hackney Music Development Trust.
