    Improvisational Three

Piano Improvisational – Caprice Record's innovative CD series featuring improvisations on the piano – continues with its third volume. On it, the pianist Jacob Karlzon, based in Malmö, improvises on (and is inspired by) the Frenchman Maurice Ravel's more and less known works.
Jacob Karlzon is one of Sweden's most interesting jazz pianists. Since his debut in 1990 he has played with some of the foremost musicians in Sweden, Denmark and the world: Kenny Wheeler, Billy Cobham, Jeff Ballard, Jon Christensen, Cæcilie Norby, Rigmor Gustafsson, Peter Asplund, Anders Bergcrantz and Putte Wickman – only to name a few.
Besides leading his own trio, he is also the leader in Viktoria Tolstoy's group and the pianist in Tolvan Big Band. On Improvisational three we can hear how Jacob, in an upfront but respectful way, takes a leap using Maurice Ravel's artistry as a trampoline for his improvising. In Ravel he finds lyricism and harmony that perfectly balances with but also challenges his own. Through the encounter with Ravel, Jacob Karlzon opens a room in his own artistry and sounds surprisingly more personal and intimate than ever.
Improvisational is a concept that was invented to create new and challenging musical platforms for improvised music. All volumes in the series have been recorded under the same conditions: night-time at Nybrokajen 11, on a Steinway grand piano with only a producer/sound technician as a creative counterpart. Moreover, the pianists are not told what the theme will be in their particular session until just before the recording starts.
