Slur Magazine Interview Fall 1995
Current mood:
betrayedSLUR Magazine interview with drummer Dean Relf, Fall, 1995 by Jason Borgeson:It's been some time since Disciples of Power released their debut album Power Trap a few years back, but the follow up is finally here, ushered in by a series of live dates in Edmonton. As of this writing, the album is as yet unreleased, but having heard several of the tunes in the live setting, I can confidently predict that it'll be a killer. It's called Ominous Prophecy and will likely be out by the time you read this.I recently spoke with drummer Dean Relf at their show at the RPM club.SLUR: Disciples of Power have gone through some major changes recently. Guitarist Maurice Williams and bassist Chris Chapman are no longer in the band. I recognize Collin Post from his days fronting Section 8. Who was Wes Sontag playing guitar for previously?DEAN: Both Collin and Wes were from Section 8. Collin was in a band before called Vile. This was in Medicine Hat. They've both been in the band now for, I would say, three or four months, and things have worked out really well. It's good to get some new blood in the band. After awhile you can get too familiar with what you're doing, but having the new guys in the band brings the excitement level up again.SLUR: Tell me about Ominous Prophecy...DEAN: Well, our approach has matured a fair amount since the first record. We still use speed to an extent, but instead of playing at like a Slayer tempo for two minutes, we just use a few fast parts to help the song. Overall we were able to achieve a pretty gloomy effect. It's intricate but not hyper so there's more of a heavy vibe to the whole thing.SLUR: Lyrics?DEAN: There's nothing overly political but we have dropped the fantasy thing, like in "Ice Demons". The song "Nature's Fury" is sort of on the same issue as "Crisis" (off Power Trap), but from a different angle. Whereas "Crisis" was about what man is doing to the earth, this new song talks about the earth retaliating, taking revenge. Side two is within a concept. It's about the end of the world. Nostrodamus, Revelations, things that are happening now.SLUR: Did Wes or Collin contribute to the writing?DEAN: No, the songs were all written before they came into the band. They will likely have ideas for the third album, though.SLUR: I've noticed that Collin's bass sound carries really well live. Has this improved your studio sound as well?DEAN: Well, Hart (Bachmier, guitars and vocals) did the bass tracks on the album, and we haven't really recorded any demos for awhile, so I can't really say at this point. But yeah, Collin fits into this band better at the moment than the guy who was with us before did. He's more into this sort of band whereas the other guy more like sort of flowed, not so driving.SLUR: I thought that Power Trap had a good production, though you've said that you were disappointed with it in some aspects. Did Brian Taylor or Marty Jones again have a hand in recording?DEAN: No. Any band that's new with Fringe pretty much goes with who the company wants to produce. We didn't want to say much when they suggested Brian Taylor before, but this time we wanted to get away from being associated with someone else's sound. That's one of the main reasons why Hart and I did everything ourselves on this album. It's important to develop a distinctive sound.SLUR: So you guys are still on Fringe?DEAN: Yes but it's our last album with Fringe. We only did the two-record deal with them. Once we get this album out we're off of them and we can go look for a new deal.SLUR: Will Fringe be pushing it as far as distribution goes?DEAN: No, they don't… they might push it a little bit more than the first one, but not by much; it'd be not much different. They just do domestic. You can get the album in Europe but only as an import, around $40. We actually get most of our mail from Europe. A lot of fanzines, some bands. A lot of people have the demos through demo trading I would presume.SLUR: After the Fringe deal is over, do you have any ideas as to what you'd like to sign with?DEAN: Yeah, we'd like to get on a larger independent. Roadracer, Combat, possibly. Those are the main ones. I think labels like that would have some idea of what to do with a band like us.SLUR: Touring ...DEAN: We're going on tour at the end of June. We do a Canadian tour. There's no plans of us going to the States as of yet. We'd like to go to Europe but we don't know what's happening with that. We're gonna wait on that. So basically we're just going to concentrate on Canada as much as we can. We're hoping to put a tour package together with Razor, possibly Gorguts from Montreal.- by Jason Borgeson -

Invincible Enemy, third lp complete lyrics
Current mood:
INVINCIBLE ENEMY
cheerful
© (P) 1993 Power of Death Music. All music/lyrics by Hart Bachmier, SOCAN.
Lyrics reprinted by permission.
1) AFTERBIRTH 1:36
(INSTRUMENTAL)
2) INVINCIBLE ENEMY 6:15
What not as power as time
Why does evil rule the mind of man
When will the end of this world occur
Where are the answers to these questions
How will we survive
Time to face reality
Battle with the entity
Invisible soon we will see
Invincible enemy
The future is now the enemy
Invincible you soon shall see
Change of reason way too late
Humanoids ominous fate
This time untimely beast is synthesized
Lose you rights to be alive
Dissecting the facts of death
Lust, greed, and pain
Control you subliminally
Death, deceit, mistrust
Leave you in misery
Rotting, filth, disease
Directs your feeble mind
Violence, hate, murder
These are the crimes of time
The weak will not survive
For they are now all deprived
The strong secure empires
Condemning their brother's fate
Hate never forgets
Blind as the rats
Wheels in wheels
Spin through your mind
Dismember the past
Future won't hold
Time running fast
Invincible
No one can stop the inevitable
Invincible force of evil
Invisible force of time
Will you die by corruption's sword
Untimely beast is synthesized
3) INFECTED BY SCIENCE 6:55
Society hails the gods of progress
Fallacious lies infect the process
Spiritual ways are cast aside
Malignant tumors rot the system from inside
Creatures of creation
Science has no soul
Mystic experimentation
Infect loss of control
Electroids charging into exposed brain
Severed tendons never to walk again
Injecting poisons intervenial pain
Testing for our future
Conflicting with nature
You advance so steadily
possessing no morality
In violation of the laws of the gods
Loss of direction causing this infection
You will recieve just punishment
Contaminate the next generations
You have passed false judgements
Plant seeds of hate induse germination
Show your defiace, break the alliance
Destroy the giant, infected science
Incarcerated to march in this submissive procession
Blinding infraction now causing some of us to react
Feel the rage must save the lives of the creatures
No remorse felt by sadistic murders
Cure our sickness cure death and disease
Trapped inside the cage of mortal pleas
These are your decisions
Inflicting impure incisions
The violation of the flesh and the mind
Start disinfection cleansing deep infection
Truthful reaction starting with refraction
Intoxication of power with no sence of direction
Blinding infraction causing some of us to react
Genetic butcher
Blind pain torturer
Breaking alliance
Infected by science
4) BORN UNTO DEATH 6:56
Dementia of insanity
Trapped inside thier poisoned land
Pray to gods that do not hear
Soon to rot with pangs of fear
Physphoria - Herds of human starving omens
Thinning skeletons scorching, roasting, rotting in the sun
Tears of iron - Weighing heavy in your mind
Over population - Creating mass confusion
Born unto your death - No gods in you sky
Born unto your demise - Death awaits for you
Born unto death
Massive suffering - Human atrocities
Painful deprivation - Mass annihilation
Lies
Fertilized egg inside the womb of death
Umbilical cord not channelling nourishment
Mother's milk a rancid devil's brew
Fetus shocked by deathly morbid gruel
End this mass suffering
Watch then die in a wink of an eye
Blame the rich and powerful
Waste of souls on revolation
Concussive suffocation
Speaking your incantation
Pain excruciation - Scorching immolation
Leave the rotting savages
Don't kill them let them suffer
Don't even hear the dying children
Truth exists in children's cries
5) INJECTICIDE 2:00
(INSTRUMENTAL)
6) LORDS OF CREATION 7:53
Call for the watcher
The kreator universal leader
Lords of creation
Blind religious supreme
Gods your dictator
Lords of creation watcher of the universe
Save us our teacher breed all so truly perverse
Paths of thier greed lost inside evil's choking grasp
Ancient ones show us the way
Through this blinding path
We exist in fabric of the universe
Galaxies collide
Stars explode as I speak
Reality of our world we can see
Through the mind's eye
Lords of creation see our degradation
Watcher of planet your biological project
Since man awakening
Aggressive nature
Explosive behavior
Visions of evil regulated
Into gods Satan and Lucifer
Mysteries of time and space
Aura of Revelation
Lords
Lords of creation give us syncopation
Kill for religion as we flow to termination
Call for the watcher
The kreator universal leader
Mercenaries of deception
Crusades of no direction
Lords of creation
Blind religious supreme
Gods your dictator
Lethal poisons religious technology
Trapping us inside this prison
A king to lead us to inner realities
Can we conceive the message of the mind's eye
You shall be sent away and you must not return
Your knowledge rots the mothers' souls
7) RETURN FROM THE GATES 8:49
Death greets all in the end
Some die before thier time
Return from realms of the dead
Not yet time for your end
I - Grim reaper, evil bringer - Death
Soul - Harvester - Spirit killer - Pain
Release now - Your life force
Deathlike - Slumber
Comatose - Nocturnal
Dream-like forces
Body lies - Senses still aware
Float above the lifeless husk
Feel no pain anymore
Plunging through living corridors
Walls alive with sight and sound
Light of strength beyond this door
Suddenly, Twisting evil messenger
Tries to steal my souls very existance
If I am dead, I am still aware
If it is a dream, it is so intense and extreme
Is this all a hallucination
What are these images around me
Will I return from the gates
Look up and stare into all-knowing light
It has shape and form but no texture
Indescribable light
Golden rays of energy
Like a moth being drawn toward the flame
Feeling of rapture part of the universe
I am one with eternity
With forces right in front of me
Spectral glow of energy
Structures of life's intensities
Pull back from the light
Pain seems to feel my soul
Freed into darkness
Into crypts of fire
Return to the gates of Hell
Return from the gates
8) BEFORE THE END 2:53
Crossing paths inside the circle
Grieving pasts outside the city
Give at last your life's blood
Warmth of death cover my soul
Shell of horror trapped within
Pen that bleeds the inks of pain
Write this passage, cry forever
Pain so raw it does not bend
After birth before the end
