Dear Daniel Ryudo. Once, when dinosaurs were roaming the earth and your grandgrandgrandma and my grandgrandgrandma were waiting around the fire for our grandgrandgrandpas to come back with some dead gradgrandgrandanimal, you wrote me a glorious comment. And then, as usual, a big long superloud silence on my part. My god, if only I was drug-smacked superstar drawing teddy bears on a hotel room walls while legoins of fans are storming through the corridor...I would understand. But being an ordinary next-door prick that happens to make music...you deserve my apologies.

I say - no more sounds of silence. Let's invigorate this fragile online relationship. If you were here I would open a bottle of red wine. But you're not. So I'll have it all by myself :)

I'm creating a mailing list that will bring exclusive things to people who sign up for it. And it will take our interaction to a more human and less paleozoic level. Myspace is turning into a desert of spam, Facebook is occupied by a legions of sad lost cows, not to mention the connection will stay alive across everchanging network trends and mass migrations.

There is new and intriguing music that I'm working on, as well as some writings. I'd be terribly honored to have you included on a list of people that care. Actually, I don't want to be followed by any other type.

For a start, when you sign up you will receive a link to a free download of my debut album plus a few sweet bonuses.

Refresh your memory, I suggest 'Night' or 'You is I', take glass of water, sit down, inhale deeply and bang! - come here:

Anyway, that was too long to be accounted for a comment. Take it as a sequel to 'War and Peace'.

Bio:

Daniel began learning the shakuhachi from Ikezoe Kyodo, a master of the Chikudosha (literally 'bamboo child group') branch of the Kinko school of shakuhachi in Kochi, Japan in 1987, studying Japanese gaikyoku (literally "outside pieces" -chamber music from the Edo Period - 1600-1868, played in ensemble with koto and shamisen) and honkyoku ('original music'), solo meditative pieces originally played by the Fuke Zen sect of wandering 'ronin' monks during the Edo Period (1600-1868). In 2001 he received the shihan (master's) license and the shakuhachi name Ryudo from Chikudosha's iemoto Fuji Jido. In addition to performing for various local koto and shakuhachi recitals, he has played traditional pieces for over a decade in the annual Kochi Sankyoku Ensokai, the prefecture's largest traditional music event, and has performed in ensemble with other Kinko ryu Chikudosha players at locations such as Kanai Hall, Yokohama (1993), the Shanghai Concert Hall (1999) -- together with the Shanghai Traditional Music Orchestra, and at the National Theatre of Japan, Tokyo (2003). Daniel enjoys improvizing in addition to playing the classical Japanese pieces and has performed solo and/or with local musicians in locations such as Hong Kong, Paris, Bucharest, Florence, Sheffield, Leiden, and most recently as one of the guest performers in composer Keiko Ueda's piece "Beyond" at the 2010 Shakuhachi Festival in Kumamoto, Kyushu. In September 2008 he was a guest artist at Georgia State University's School of Music, performing honkyoku pieces at Kopleff Recital Hall. Daniel has attended shakuhachi maestro Yokoyama Katsuya's annual workshops in Bisei, Japan for the last decade and participated in the world shakuhachi festivals in Bisei, Boulder, Tokyo, and New York, and the Australian festival in Melbourne in 2002, performing in shakuhachi orchestral pieces in those events. He is a member of Kochi's Aozora Band, a group featured in this year's Takara Ongakusai (Kochi Music Festival) and of local ethnomusic collective Windbeat, and also teaches a small group of shakuhachi students the traditional shakuhachi repertoire. For those interested in learning more about shakuhachi, Daniel recommends looking at the site Shakuhachi Forum - World Shakuhachi Discussion, administrated by Brian Ritchie and Ken LaCosse.
