    East of Eden
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

    He left Gustine,
    Blew through Bolinas,
    Where she last held him
In the broken arms of Venus.
Rolling in the arms of Venus.

    She went home,
    Back to Salinas,
    With the dawn light breaking
On some back road East of Eden.
    Driving East of Eden.

    How the years and miles,
    Stretched out between them.
    Now they’re tail lights fading,
On the highway that once freed them.
How the road once freed them.

    Never Be the Same

    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

    Margarita took a photo,
And dropped it in my case,
    A strange and distant longing,
On a strange and distant face.

    And on her brow,
She paints a portrait of pain,
She will never, never be the same.
She will never, never be the same.

A street man stood there and told a story
Of the last real home he had,
He said he really didn't miss it,
    He said he wasn't sad.

    For his life,
    No regrets, no shame.
He will never, never be the same.
He will never, never be the same.

I knew a young man, he loved a woman.
He loved her strong, he loved her true
But his love was not reflected,
So like the bird he flew.

    Down to the river,
Out to the ocean of rain.
He will never, never be the same.
He will never, never be the same.

    Glory Parade
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

    Maybe it's the season,
    Or maybe it's the stars,
    The coming of the Winter,
    Or the rising of Mars.

But I've been feeling cold today,
    So cold and so afraid,
I hear the mob outside my window,
    Marching in a glory parade.
    In a glory parade.

    Maybe it's this fearful will,
That's seen the world and won't be born,
As all creation falls from our hands,
The babe from the mother torn.

    But I've been hollow lately,
    So empty and alone,
As the flower of this young heart withers,
    Petal into stone.
    Into stone

    Patriot’s Voice

    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

    In the angry streets
The battle cry is heard again.
As the foolish and the evil march as one.
And they tell you it’s for peace
and for freedom you must kill.
And that truth flows from the barrel of your gun.

And Johnny goes marching off to war,
Never asking what he’s killing for.
He has stilled his patriot’s voice.
    Some day he may realize,
Some dark night he may realize,
That all his killing was by choice.

    In the dead of night,
The orphan’s cry is heard again.
As the wives and the mother’s weep alone.
And the cowards and the cynics,
    Sit in somber silence,
Hoping truth flows from the barrel of your gun.

    In the dawning day,
The victor’s cry is heard again.
As the fiery glory clears and his eyes fall on all that’s won.
And he weeps for his dead brother,
Who was on the other side,
Both believing truth flows from the barrel of their gun.

And we all go marching off to war,
Never asking what we’re living for
We must raise our patriot’s voice.
    Some day we must realize,
    Today we must realize,
To stop this killing is our choice.

    Johnny Joined Up
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

    Johnny joined up yesterday,
He saw the ad at the liquor store.
He was looking for a place to stay,
He couldn’t sleep in the streets no more.

The promise of a full day’s wage,
And people to talk to like before,

A warm bed and three meals a day,
Now tell me, who could ask for more?

    He is never alone.
    He is never afraid.
He’s learned the cadence of a killer’s heart.
He is marching in this parade.

Billy said the pledge in school,
    Back at P.S. 63.
He heard the speech from the recruiter,
    At the school assembly.

His father was a Navy man.
He gave his life in the service of his country.
He says, “If it’s good enough for my dear Papa,
Well, then it’s good enough for me”.

    He is now a man.
    Worthy of the uniform,
He does his job, and he knows his place.
He is a trooper in this storm.

    Frontiers of Sorrow
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

I see you dive right down
    Into the river of history.
I see you stand up proud,
You are the master of your destiny.

    You walk the land,
You breath in deep and you walk the land,
And I know that you understand,
That the dawn lies sleeping in our own hands.

I hear you ring the bell
    In this hour of silence,
I see you find your will,
Despite the terror and the violence,

    That could bring you down,
To your knees down upon the ground,
But you don’t let it drag you down,
You take it in and you turn it around,
    Turn it around.

    I see you walking out,
    On the frontiers of sorrow.
    How your young heart aches,
    For your vision of tomorrow,

    You rise again.
Recall your dream, then you rise again,
Like the gentle and flowing wind,
You bring the hope back to my heart again.

    Path of Changes
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

We met on the path of changes,
    Down at the bitter end.
    Homeless children,
    Lost in hopeless shadow,
Seeking the shelter of a friend.

The mountain took us to her bosom,
She showed us the winter, then the spring.
The barren fig and the white plum blossom,
    Circle of grace revealing.

    Wisdom patiently waited,
For the light to touch our eye,
    A rainbow painted the canyon,
The sun broke in the sky.

The mountain took us to her bosom,
She showed us the winter, then the spring.
The barren fig and the white plum blossom,
    Circle of grace revealing.

    Winter's Seed
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

We of flesh, and blood, and bone
Sense the shadow on our eye,
See the circle and its end,
Feel the pulse within our breast.

And know it won't be too long my love
    Until the circle comes around
As winter's seed is pressed into soft ground.
    Into soft ground.

We 'neath steel and reddened skies,
Drink soft visions from our streams,
Walk fresh garden in our dream,
    Wander night on pilgrim's wing.

And know it won't be too long my love,
Until the night breaks into dawn,
And then our hands may reap what our hands have sown.
    What are your hands sowing?

    We of gentle lion heart,
    Journey to the tyrant's gate,
Taste the gaze of prison guards,
Paint tomorrow on the ghetto walls.

And no, it won't be too long my love,
Until the guns will sound no more.
Mothers no more to weep over blossom babes.
    All the blossom babes

    All the blossom babes,
    'neath the winter snow,
    All the blossom babes,
Out where the cold winds blow.

    Canaan Blues
    by Cap Wilhelm-Safian

    I’m going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
    Going down to Canaan soon.

    I’m going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
I’ll be there before the next full moon.

I’m going to meet a woman with eyes of green,
And a smile that’s always painting a springtime scene,
We’re gonna live that age old American dream,
I’m gonna share my life with her,
She’s gonna share her life with me.

Then we’ll be going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
    Going down to Canaan soon.

    We’re going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
We’ll be there before the next full moon.

Brown, Yellow, Red, Black and White,
Children of the rainbow, it’s come time to unite.
Use your heart to see, that’s the surest kind of sight.

All God’s children under the sun,
We must learn to live as one,

Then we’ll be going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
    Going down to Canaan soon.

    We’re going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
We’ll be there before the next full moon.

    From Beijing to California,
We’re gonna build a new utopia,
    Feast from freedom’s cornucopia,
    Going down to Canaan land,
Going down in hand, in hand, in hand,

Yeah, we’ll be going down to Canaan,
    Down to Canaan land,
We’ll be there before the next full moon.
