BLAKTRONIKs - “SLAPMATIK” is taking the beats back to basics.“We are all about hard beats, bass lines, and razor sharp melodies”. This time it’s all about the hardware sounds and samples. No smoke and mirrors, just beats that stomp a mud hole in your ears. Blaktroniks has a long discography of creative style and productions. Oakland artists Edd Dee Pee, MC Veda 36, and Percepticon has developed a tele-presence in this industry for more than a decade. Percepticon plays guitar, write compose, arrange, and design etc. Edd Dee Pee drum programming, digital processing, and bass playing makes up a good team for a SlapMatik style. Making music with a focus, and knowing when to have fun at the same time.“When I (Edd) was a kid I use to hook up a drum machine to the deck in my ride and put my home stereo speakers in the trunk”. Everything must bump or slap. When we added the technology to the equation, it became electronic. Now it only made sense to bring the two elements together and form the SlapMatik EP. - Edd Dee Pee www.deepblak.com Written and produced by BLAKTRONIKS (Edd Dee Pee & Badi Malik) for Deepblak Recordings 2009. (over 100 airplays on german radios ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------ REVIEW-QUOTES: UPDATE (UK) The fifth album from Oakland outfit Blaktroniks busts the hiphop form out of its constraints with a work of remarkable depth, spirituality and innovation. Hiphop should always have been about conveying messages and emotions while blazing exciting new trails. This stunning album practically reinvents it. With this and Glasgow's scathing Fool project suddenly the genre seems able to escape the dollar-ruled pantomime it seemed in danger of becoming years ago. 5 Dancing Men IDJ (UK) Embracing the finest lo-fi electronica, Oakland..s Blaktroniks dance with both a tiptoe and a moonwalk on their fifth album. Steered by the falteringly tender, blues-y blear of Edward Robinson. ... Hiccupping, shift ..n..shunt beats - a busy minimalism if you will, that can..t be played too loud for fear of waking the neighbours - stress the importance of scene-shaping drums, given that the overlaying production is, for the most part exceptionally slight ... there..s a fine album in your hands. The minute adjustments and delicately decorated staggers have it moving ghost-like in search of space-age soul enlightment. Q MAGAZINE (UK) Refreshingly hard-to-categorize experiment from Oakland producer Edd Dee Pee, who adroitly combines techno, dub and the bluesy tones of his 60-year-old father Edward Robinson, a Detroit-born soul singer. THE WIRE (UK) it..s the sheer conceit of Blaktroniks making out they..ve stumbledon some entirely novel fusion which makes the album half work. The disconnect, for example between the Marvin Gaye-like vocals on "Open Up Your Heart" and the dense mesh of cyberbeats which sits tangentially to its genuinely not quite like anything you..ve heard before. The pre-gangsta rapping reminds you of a more innocent hiphop era. SPEX (D) "...self-contained and innovative productions, where you can discover new particles, even after endless listening-sessions" - to compare music is not the best thing to do, but here..s a try: ... Freestyle Fellowship and the Roots come to mind relating to the political consciousness in hiphop, Blaktroniks share the bandwith of syncoped and straight beats with 4 Hero and the sonical experimentation-joy reminds of "Sun Ra with many tracks" SPEX-Online (D) ... the Rapstyles remind of early Jungle Brothers or Sensationel, or Madlib" ... the instrumentals are the outstanding thing about the "mechanized soul"... the production is precise" INTRO (D) "they merge, deephouse, drum and bass influences, Avant-Hiphop to Soul. No this is not the usual Entertainment, The Voices, the Rappers have a serious authority, like for example Guru from Gang Starr, which makes him to more then the usual MC. Sonic waves as a soulfull history-lesson" DE:BUG (D) "the title of the fifth album is truly the concept: it..s about SOUL - the feeling of Hitsville Detroit and not Hit-Factory Mark Ronson... the whole thing is days overdue - this shall and has to set the standard !" SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG (D) "who needs a soul-record sounding like 40yeas ago ? blak music always looked forwards. and without risk no adrenalin ! Blaktroniks show how to do it on their new album "mechanized soul" ... abstract-soulful techno, soul in the sense of spirituality ... proving that you can save the voices of the parents into the present in non-emberassing way !" THE MESSAGE (AU) "the playing is experimental, but it..s done on purpose and everything else but amateurish ... Blaktroniks withdraw from the usual approach of musicians totally.... Blaktroniks create their very own state of art and stand out from the crowd ... the magic of the father-son-cooperation shines above it all... " GROOVE (D) "to be recommended ... the new blaktroniks-album ... always full of experiments with breaks, poetry and hiphop" VICE (EUROPE) "7 points !" CHOICES (D) "very cool urban sound" STATION to STATION (D) "in the truest sense deeply impressing album, 10 of 10 points - record of the month" RHEIN NECKAR ZEITUNG (D) "highest score: Gigantic ! a great father&son-project ...." PLAN B (UK) "Its ace." M8 (TECHNO) (UK) "Love it " LITTLE DETROIT (UK) "Loved this album, very different from the usual stuff." OUT-OF-SPACE (CH) "I am thrilled, a mixture, like I never heard before.... you have to listen to this, you never get to hear something like this. actually there..s only three words for this: wonderful, perfect & unique" - 10 from 10 points - TIPP !!! NITESTYLEZ (D) "Slow, sluggish beats meet what might be named as Advanced HipHop here plus a lot of oldskool'ish, crooning Soul / Gospel / Blues references ... "Mechanized Soul" is to be regarded as future classic anyway and will sound fresh in ten years time, no matter what happens in between .. KREISLAUF (D) ...this cd is running in my cd-player on rotation since days t and is on it..s way to be nominated as the music of the year ... actually the album is not a slight fare, but still Eddie Patrick manages it to make it sound easy ... now the summer may come ...
