How Can I Live With Over 16 Food Allergies?

..........

Sometimes we can ask the universe a question and she will answer back immediately-straight with no chaser. Forgive me for being vain, but I will never forget the day I inquired about my chronic acne and eczema. I have had acne off and on since I was a teenager. The eczema was a new thing. But, either way, they were both being a nuisance and I tried everything but the buggers would not go away.

.. ..

Well a friend and I went out to lunch one day and she told me a story about how she went to the allergist and they discovered she was allergic to beef. And, ever since she eliminated beef all of her respiratory ailments vanished. Something clicked in my brain to go and see her allergist. So, I made an appointment. The initial testing simply involved writing out a food diary and a blood test.

.. ..

The second visit involved a skin allergy test. And, this is where the fun began. They basically stuck about 20 or so different allergens in my arms to see what I was allergic to. I’m advised that there may be a little bit of itching but not to scratch. I am cool for about 30 seconds and then my arms swell up and the itching is so intense that I want to rub my arms up and down the walls. I have roughly over two dozen swollen little bumps from where they prodded me.

.. ..

Finally the allergist begins to check my arms but is so perplexed by my results that she can’t help but make comments.

.. ..

“Oh, my, you are a mess,” she said encouragingly about 10 times.

.. ..

I sit in the sterile office chair. I’m calm. I have the heart of a lion but it’s pounding franticly. She tallies up all my results and advises that I’m allergic to soy, beef, pork, chicken, black pepper, lettuce, apples, oranges, tomatoes, caffeine, eggs, chocolate, dairy, rice, corn, wheat, yeast, and a few others I refuse to mention. Literally the only thing I was not allergic to were peanuts. And, I was allergic to everything outside including dogs.

.. ..

“I’m sorry sweetie. You are going to need a nutritionist,” my allergist advised.

.. ..

How could this be? What bubble will I live in? She goes on to tell me I will have to eliminate the foods from my diet for six weeks and then once my immune system is restored I can rotate the food back in my system every four days. But, I will never be able to eat them freely as before. Who wants to hear their immune system needs restoration?

.. ..

I felt like the world had let me down. The flood gates opened and I began to cry like someone stole my car, my bike and my boat. There I was blowing my nose as my allergist tried to console me. She told me I was the first she’d seen with so many.

.. ..

I’m a foodie. I love food. I’m the girl with snacks in her purse. I’m the one who’s always hungry and ready for war when I need to eat.  I love buttered bread, cereal and anything that needs miracle whip. Being that I was a quasi-when I felt like it-vegetarian, I could live with out the meat. But, no soy, no chocolate, no rice?

.. ..

But, I asked the universe for clarity. And, I must say as I write this I have only one pimple and the eczema is completely gone. It has been about four months. I basically have a cave woman diet. But, the more I adjust and accept my new life of berries, seeds, vegetables and beans the easier it becomes.

.. ..

Plus, there are other benefits I didn’t ask for. No more dandruff. My mood swings are at an all time low. I don’t always need a nap. I have the energy of a two year old. My cravings are non-existent. I am now a self proclaimed raw food chef with some tasty recipes. But, over all I just feel great and have this uncontrollable happiness for no apparent reason…it’s like I was born again.

.. ..

It’s amazing and probably one of the hardest yet most fulfilling things I have done in the last 32 years. Therefore, if you send the universe a query make sure you’re ready for the answer. Be prepared for the highs and lows of the path you must travel to get the clarity and then the peace. Be well and please enjoy your food!
